Robert Sergent-Fairley, the extremely enthusiastic and highly inventive Director of Belsize Landscapes, as a LONDON GARDEN DESIGNER is probably more knowledgeable in CHILDRENS GARDEN DESIGNS, CHILDRENS TREE HOUSES AND CHILDRENS ACTIVITY PLAYGROUNDS than any other person in UK GARDEN DESIGNS OR IN LONDON GARDEN DESIGNS.

For LONDON SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS, Robert has a unique formulae in his School Garden Designs.
He does not believe in multi-coloured modular units set in Artificial Surroundings. He has often stated that he considers these as “Ghastly”, “Gharish”, “Cold”, “Impersonal” and “A Cheap Short Cut to Children’s Happiness”.
He is a vehement believer in the idea of small children growing up in Natural Surroundings School Playgrounds.
To this end, his London School Playground Designs are an alternative version of his Gold and Silver Award Winning London Garden Designs for Woodland Gardens, Natural Gardens and Family Gardens, for which he is famous.
One of Robert’s idioms is that “A HARD LANDSCAPED SCHOOL PLAYGROUND CREATES HARD CHILDREN”.
He points out that people adapt to their environment and that equally, an environment affects the personality, the demeanour and the whole outlook of a person. He uses as examples that animals living in dry Jungle areas tend to have developed light sandy coloured skins (or fur); whereas animals in the Polar Icy and Snowy regions have developed white skins (or furs); even fish, he comments, have adapted to their surrounds as North sea fish tend to be grey whereas Indian Ocean fish are multi coloured amongst their bright underwater Corals.
He does not accept the long running view that LONDON SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS should automatically be covered in concrete, be surrounded by high chain link wire fencing and be filled with an alliteration of brightly coloured Polymer and Tubular Steel Play Units.
“LONDON INFANT SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS” he states “SHOULD BE NATURAL LIVING ENVIRONMENTS, WHERE THE CHILDREN CAN RUN FREELY IN NATURAL GREEN SURROUNDINGS; HERE THEY CAN INVENT GAMES, USE UP ENERGY AND FIND THE AGE OLD ENJOYMENTS OF DIGGING, OF GROWING, OF COLLECTING, OF HIDING, OF ROLLING, OF CLIMBING AND JUST UNWINDING SURROUNDED BY NATURE”.
Robert accepts that LONDON JUNIOR SCHOOLS AND LONDON SENIOR SCHOOLS need large hard surfaces for Childrens Activity Games and for Childrens Sport Games.
However, his attitude is that with a little forethought and a carefully executed SCHOOL PLAYGROUND DESIGN that both Junior and Senior Children can study play and have recreation in beautiful London School Garden surroundings.
Robert has always termed himself as a British “NIWASHI” which is the Japanese name for a Garden Designer; A JAPANASE NIWASHI SPENDS SEVERAL MONTHS OF EACH YEAR, TRAVELLING AND WALKING ALONE IN THE MOUNTAINS, THE FORESTS AND ALONG THE WOODED RIVERS. He then returns to the Japanese Cities where he completes his Garden Designs in which he depicts Nature on a Microcosmic scale.
Robert has always been a complete Nature Lover and spends time alone for days, weeks and sometimes months, PURELY WALKING AND STUDYING NATURE AND ENJOYING TRANQUIL WOODLANDS, DEEP FORESTS, OPEN MEADOWS, TIMELESS RUSHING RIVERS AND GURGLING STREAMS.
As with his counterparts “THE NIWASHIS” ROBERT RECREATES NATURE, on a smaller scale, in all his London Garden Designs.
For all Infant Schools Playground Designs, Junior Schools Playground Designs and Senior Schools Playground Designs ROBERT FIRST AIMS AT PROVIDING “GREEN WALLS” AS BOUNDARIES, generally inside the existing Colditz Style Council Fencing.
These boundary “Green Walls” can be Wooden Fencing with Established Evergreen Climbers or, Trees with shrubs in between or, simply a hedging of Evergreen Shrubs; the standard hedging is Ligustrum (Privet) but Robert prefers to use Camellias or similar FLOWERING EVERGREEN SHRUBS.
Robert then turns his attention to the actual London School Playground Area and generally softens this with Raised Plant Beds. His highly experienced Team of Professional Landscapers, either construct these Raised Beds from Reclaimed Bricks or more generally from Timber Poles or from Treated and Planed Timber lengths; sometimes they construct a low sitting area on these raised walls.
Robert has always insisted on using TIMBER FROM SUSTAINABLE SOURCES.
EXISTING GROUND SURFACES IN MOST LONDON SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS ARE NORMALLY HARD AND UNINVITING AREAS. Robert always softens these with Timber Deckings, Exciting Walkways and Lawns.
If space permits, Robert likes to create “LAWN AREAS”, “LONG GRASS AREAS” AND ALSO “WOODLAND GRASS AREAS” COMPLETE WITH “WILD FLOWERS”, HUMP BACK BRIDGES”, “WOODEN ARCHES” AND “MAGICAL WALKWAYS”.
London School Playgrounds also require PLAY HOUSES, PLAY DENS, PIRATE CASTLES, AND EXCITING ACTIVITY PLAYGROUNDS.
Robert’s London School Playground Designs include Hand Constructed Play Buildings as well as Climbing Frames, Climbing Ropes, Swings, Jungle Bridges, Wobbly Walkways, Pet Houses, Tunnels, Hills, Sandpits, Musical Bamboo Chimes and Seating Areas either on Benches or under Flower Covered Arbours and Gazebos.
